Mostly Racin’ Stuff  – Volume #251 - May 12, 2016

By TOM AVENENGO

OK, I’ve been to quite a few races in my lifetime, starting out by going to watch the midgets with my father, back in 1946, when I was 9 years old.  I’ve attended some pretty big events here in the US.  As an example, the 12 hours of Sebring, back in 1957, with my brother, “Jim”.  Indy cars at Darlington, with my father and brother, in 1951.  Eventually I was old enough to go to some racing events on my own – tracks like Trenton and Langhorne, for midget, sprint cars and Indy car races.  Eventually, my sons, Tom Jr and Eric became race drivers.  Nothing really “big time”, mind you, but “local” racing.  Both started out in Karts, then Tom had a street stock and Eric followed suit, starting out in Karts, then he had a modified for a little while, and then he had a Micro Sprint for his son, Brett to race.  With the “dying out” of midgets and sprint cars, we took up going to the track in Middletown, N.Y. to attend the stock car races.

The column photo of one car that was quite a “looker”.

051116 - Haenelt

Above is one car (Modified) that I really liked.  The “a1” was normally driven by the late Eddie Haenelt.  I dunno, but I think we’d be better off if today’s cars were similar in appearance.  Notice how you can see the driver?  Oh, well, I guess those days are gone forever, huh?

So, it kinda looks like there were a few problems with my column last week.  The two photos I had in it, even though they were in the column when I sent it, just did not appear, so I resent them.  Hopefully, things have been straightened out, now.  Well, my column did get posted on May 6th, after a few problems – at least it’s been posted on Dirt Track Digest, and later on on the New England Tractor’s website.  I did notice that one photo did not make it though – the one that shows Mike Nazaruk’s wrecked sprint car when he was fatally injured at Langhorne, back on 5/1/55.  So. I’ll try posting it again, in this week’s column.  Here it is.   Somehow, I think he either hit the fence with his right rear, or might have had a blown tire.  As you can see, his right rear tire is no longer on his right rear wheel.

Interesting news.  I wonder what will happen?

Kerry, Teresa Earnhardt in battle over last name: Teresa Earnhardt, known for being staunchly protective of the Dale Earnhardt brand and marks, is trying to keep a couple from using “Earnhardt” in the name of homes they developed. That couple? Dale Earnhardt’s son Kerry Earnhardt and Kerry’s wife, Rene. Teresa Earnhardt, Kerry’s stepmother and Dale’s widow, doesn’t want the couple to use the name Earnhardt Collection and filed an appeal last week in federal court over a U.S. Patent and Trademark Office ruling that denied Teresa’s challenge to the “Earnhardt Collection” trademark applied for by Kerry Earnhardt Inc.

“Rene and I have worked extremely hard to develop the Earnhardt Collection brand and make it uniquely ours,” Kerry Earnhardt said in a statement to ESPN.com “I chose to leave a successful career in racing and could not be happier with what we’ve been able to achieve in the five years we’ve been building our home lifestyle brand inspired by our love of the outdoors.”

Teresa Earnhardt didn’t testify in the [trademark] case but states in her appeal that the name Earnhardt Collection is likely to deceive or cause confusion among people that the homes and products are endorsed by Dale Earnhardt or by her. Kelley Earnhardt-Miller, daughter of Dale and second wife Brenda Jackson, testified that no one has confused the Earnhardt Collection of being associated with her brother, Dale Earnhardt Jr.(ESPN.com)(5-7-2016)

Jeff Gordon publishing first authorized biography: Jeff Gordon, four-time NASCAR Cup Series champion and current FOX NASCAR broadcast analyst, is publishing his first-ever authorized biography in October. “I purposely waited until I retired from driving so the book would encompass my entire career,” says Gordon. “People are going to be able to read about me like they’ve never read about me before.” The authorized biography, “Jeff Gordon: His Dream, Drive & Destiny” is being written by Joe Garner, the five-time New York Times bestselling author of such popular hardcover collections as “And The Crowd Goes Wild” and “100 Yards of Glory.” Gordon and Garner first worked together in 2006 on the multimedia book titled “Speed, Guts, & Glory,” about landmark moments in NASCAR history. Garner was given unprecedented access. “What truly impressed me in the making of this book is the time Jeff invested. There are so many books with very little time invested by the drivers, but Jeff gave me unparalleled access at the race track, at special events – and at his home – over the past 15 months,” says Garner. The book is based on those extensive interviews with Gordon – as well as in-depth interviews with dozens of family members, friends, competitors, and colleagues, some of whom have never gone on the record before. “He put nothing off-limits and encouraged the people to speak honestly,” says Garner. “And Jeff speaks candidly, sometimes brutally so, about his childhood, his much publicized divorce, those he competed against, his family, and life after racing.” “Jeff Gordon: His Dream, Drive & Destiny” is scheduled to be released on October 18th, 2016.(JeffGordon.com)(5-6-2016)

Note:  I wonder if he’ll make any mention of just what caused him to no longer drive sprint cars and/or midgets, anymore?

Take a guess where?

Interesting stuff.  There is one reason for the race to be held at any track away from the New York area.

Hmm, kinda looks like some hands are tied with this, above.

The article starts off with this:  CONCORD, N.C. — The 45th annual NAPA Auto Parts Super DIRT Week is scheduled Oct. 5-9 at Central New York Raceway Park.

Question is – will that new facility be ready?  Of course “Mother Nature” has to be on our side, if it is.

Some interesting news, which I imagine most of us didn’t expect to see this soon:

Kindly help Bob Beidleman and family:

A fellow racer is in need of help. Bob Beidleman of Walnutport, PA is suffering from GBM brain cancer stage 4. glioblastoma multiform brain cancer is highly aggressive. In January, Bob was taken to the emergency room for what was thought to be carbon monoxide poisoning. This day forever changed Bob’s life along with his wife Cindy and their children Bobbi, Cole, and Tori. On January 25 Bob underwent surgery to remove a large mass on the right side of his brain. During the surgery Bob suffered a mild stroke because the tumor had wrapped around a main artery in his brain. Bob was hospitalized from January 25th through March 11th and during that time also developed a blood clot in his lungs and in his legs.
In the month after surgery another significant tumor formed behind where the initial tumor resection was done. Bob currently is undergoing chemotherapy and radiation that will continue for six more weeks and then after a four week break he will have an MRI to see if anything has grown and then he will begin six months of double chemotherapy treatments.
For those of you who are not familiar with Bob’s history, Bob’s grandfather and Charlie Sacks were partners in owning a sprint car driven by Eddie Sacks.  They raced in the Penn Jersey circuit now known as the URC. Bob’s grandfather wanted one of his grandsons to race and Bob was the only willing and capable one. Bob began drag racing in a 1957 Chevy and then moved on to race a late model at Dorney park between the ages of 15 and 17. Bob’s grandfather then put him in his sprint car. Bob carried on driving sprint cars in his grandfathers memory and in all honesty, the thought of being able to race again is what has kept him fighting.

Bob has applied for disability but because he worked up to two weeks prior to being admitted he must wait five months to receive his first disability payment. The family is without income and is in need of our help. They are currently in need of gas money to get to the doctors appointments for Bob and for Cindy to take care of their children. The family needs groceries and to pay mortgage payments and utilities.

Bob’s prognosis is not good but he is fighting. If you can find it in your heart please donate to Bob and his family. You can do so by either sending it directly to them at the address of 1039 Municipal Rd., Walnutport, PA 18088 or by donating on the go fund me page.

A few racing results from this past weekend.  Sad to say, “Mother Nature” wasn’t too friendly towards the racing up in the northeast, with a lot of rain outs and only a few races where some former OVRP racers were at.

Danny Creeden was 6th in the modified feature at Thunder Mountain.

At 5 Mile, Brad Szulewski was 3rd and Anthony Perrego 5th at 5 Mile in the modified feature.  In the sportsman feature, Kyle Rohner was 2nd

At OCFS:

Modifieds:  LJ Lombardo was 7th, Billy V 10th (in small block, I believe), Matt Janiak 12th, Mike Ruggerio 13th and Brendan Finley 22nd.

Small blocks: Tom Hindley 4th, Brian Krummel 5th, Joe Falanga 8th, Zack Vavricka 20th, Tim Hindley 21st and Matt Janiak 23rd.

Sportsman:  Joe Conklin 4th, Anthony Falanga 10th, Jimmy Johnson 13th, Johnny Illanovsky 21st and Joey Falanga 25th.

CRSA Sprints:  Briuan Krummel 3rd, Bobby Hackel IV 9th, Chuck Alessi 12th, Emily VanInwegen 14th,  Tyler Jashembowski 19th  and Billy V 20th.

Note:  It was young Haskel’s first time in a sprint car, in competition.

Lebanon Valley:

Modifieds:  Tyler Dipple won the feature.  Kyle Armstrong was 7th and Kolby Schroder was 14th.

Lincoln (Pa) Speedway:

Joe Kata III took a tumble in Hot Laps at Lincoln Speedway on 5-7-16.  They were able to get his car ready for the feature, and he ended up15th.

Tiffany Wambold was 10th in the Hobby Stock feature at Mahoning.

Kyle Redner was 3rd in the Sportsman feature at Bethel.

At Hamlin, Tyler Pirone was 4th in the All Star Slingshot feature, while Danny Buccafusca was 2nd in the Wingless 600 Micro feature.

Ben Whitaker was 3rd un the 358 LM feature at Susquehanna.

Note:  As you more than likely know, the results that I have in my columns, like those above, are basically from those that had run Karts & Slingshots at OVRP’s Dirt Oval.  There are some that have driven on the paved road course/courses that are now running stock cars on pavement.

A little about Jeff Heotzler:

He is one of the three drivers that have won 50 or more modified features at OCFS, with Brett Hearn and Frankie Schneider being the other two.  Jeff is the only driver to have won 50 features at OCFS and also at Accord.

He also has 21 small block feature wins at OC.

He has not had a full time modified ride at OC since 2007.

As I said above, I started going to the races back in 1946.  Here are some midget racing results from June, 1947, from up in the Northeast:

Almost 50 races during June of 1947.  This is only for NJ, NY, PA, CT, MA & CT.  There were other Midget races down in VA, too.

Keep in mind – there was no Interstate Highway system back then, and speeds were lower on the highways – well except for those that towed the race cars!

MIDDLETOWN, NY (May 9)……The headline Big-Block Modifieds will compete in a pair of 20-lap feature races this coming Saturday evening, May 14 at Orange County Fair Speedway in Middletown, New York.

Led by defending point champion Jerry Higbie, the earth-shaking, 800 horse power Modifieds will have two chances to win on the lightning fast five-eighths-mile Middletown “Hard Clay” oval. Also on the evening’s program are the Sportsman division, the Rookie Sportsman, and the always unpredictable Street Stocks. The night’s activities are sponsored by Sparta Trucking and Holiday Inn of Middletown.

With two features on tap, there’s bound to be a shakeup in the Modified point standings. In three feature races to date, three drivers have tasted victory champagne, the latest former track point champion Jeff Heotzler who registered his 50th Orange County career Modified win this past Saturday. The season’s other two Modified features were won by Bob McGannon and Tommy Meier. With Higbie, along with nearly two-dozen other Modified drivers, still looking for their first 2016 victory, the Twin-20s race night is bound to be action-packed from first lap through to the evening’s final checkered flag!

This Saturday’s racing program is also designated Boys and Girls Club Night.  In addition, the Orange County Kids Club has activities planned for youngsters in attendance.

Admission prices for the May 14 race meet remain at $15 adults, $13 seniors, and $1.00 for children 12 and under. The full night of racing begins promptly at 6:30 pm.

A little on Mr. Hickey that I picked up on Facebook:

He was the service manager at lake ford. This guy had his car in for repair and couldn’t pay bill. The guy had I think 2 midgets. They also needed work. Traded the cars and trailer and Ken paid the bill on his regular car. Then fixed the midgets and raced them and won and it went on From there. By late 50s had 8 or so. Would run all in a feature sure to win. Made lots of $$$. Was buying new Lincolns 2 at a time cash in the 50s.

He was a very smart guy.

He  had all that knowledge in his head. All the motor specs. For Offys and Indy cars. Did complete motor jobs from memory. All the tolerances.

Amazing guy and I’m sure Jimmy had his hands in it. Sounds like a good story for a book. I seen a lot of good Iron in that shop when I used to come up. I remember seeing him put those Offy’s together and not use a torque wrench.

Glenn Donnelly is scheduled to introduce an electric powered sprint car on May 10th.

Note:  Somehow I don’t think this will go over too good.  It’s been tried with a midget or two, and, to be honest, I have yet to see any electric powered midget racing results.

Found on the Track Forum:

http://www.trackforum.com/forums/showthread.php/202079-Watkins-Glen-race

Reports out there are saying that the cancelled Boston Indy Car race will be moved to Watkins Glen.  Sounds like kinda a good move, maybe?  I just wish that it was an oval, rather than a road course.

Some non-racing stuff:

On occasion, I receive e-mails that I put in my columns.  Here’s one I just got on May 6th:

California – largest insane asylum in the world
Interesting that the LA Times did this.  Lou Dobbs reported this on CNN and it cost him his job.  The only network we would see this on would be FOX.  All the others are staying away from it.  Whether you are a Democrat or Republican, this should be of great interest to you!

Just One State – be sure and read the last part… try for 3 times.

This is only one State… If this doesn’t open your eyes, nothing will!

From the L.A. Times.

  1. 40% of all workers in LA County (10.2 million people) are working for cash; and not paying taxes.  This is because they are predominantly illegal immigrants, working without a green card.  (Donald Trump was right)
  2. 95% of warrants for murder in Los Angeles are for illegal aliens.
  3. 75% of people on the most wanted list in Los Angeles are illegal aliens.
  4. Over 2/3 of all births in Los Angeles County are to illegal alien Mexicans on Medi-Cal, whose births were paid for by taxpayers.
  5. Nearly 35% of all inmates in California detention centers are Mexican nationals they are here illegally.
  6. Over 300,000 illegal aliens in Los Angeles County are living in garages.
  7. The FBI reports half of all gang members in Los Angeles are most likely illegal aliens from south of the border.
  8. Nearly 60% of all occupants of HUD properties are illegal.
  9. radio stations in LA are Spanish- speaking.
  10. In LA County, 5.1 million people speak English; 3.9 million, speak Spanish.  (There are 10.2 million people, in LA County.)

(All of the 10 above facts were published in the Los Angeles Times)

Less than 2% of illegal aliens are picking our crops, but 29% are on welfare.  Over 70% of the United States’ annual population growth, (and over 90% of California, Florida, and New York), results from immigration.  Also, 29% of inmates in federal prisons are illegal aliens.

We are fools for letting this continue.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

Send copies of this letter, to at least two other people.  100, would be even better.

This is only one State…If this doesn’t open your eyes nothing will, and you wonder why Nancy Pelosi wants them to become voters!

IF YOU DON’T AGREE, JUST DELETE — IF YOU DO PASS IT ON!  WHERE DO WE GET
THESE MORONS?

Windfall Tax on Retirement Income…  Adding a tax to your retirement is simply another way of saying to the American people “you’re so darn stupid that we’re going to keep doing this until we drain every cent from you”. Nancy Pelosi wants a Windfall Tax on Retirement Income.  In other words, tax what you have made by investing toward your retirement.  This woman is a nut case!  You aren’t going to believe this.

Nancy Pelosi wants to put a Windfall Tax on all stock market profits (including Retirement fund, 401K and Mutual Funds)!

Alas, it is true – all to help the 12 Million Illegal Immigrants and other unemployed Minorities!

This woman is frightening. She quotes… ‘We need to work toward the goal of equalizing income, (didn’t Marx say something like this?) in our country; and at the same time limiting the amount the rich can invest.  (I’m not rich, are you?)

When asked how these new tax dollars would be spent, she replied:

We need to raise the standard of living of our poor, unemployed and minorities. For example, we have an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in our country who need our help along with millions of unemployed minorities. Stock market windfall profits taxes could go a long way to guarantee these people the standard of living they would like to have as Americans.

(Read that quote again and again and let it sink in.)’Lower your retirement; give it to others who have not worked, as you have’ for your money. Send this on to your friends. I just did! This lady is out of her mind!

Remember that Nancy Pelosi is probably one of the richest people in the United States.  Have you read in the news media if she has split her wealth with the poor?  Why do the poor believe people like this?

My thoughts on the above:  Why are there so many “Illegal’s” in our country?

And some other great news:  “Illegal Immigrants don’t pay federal taxes, thanks to the fact that their jobs are, well, illegal. However, thanks to a new loophole created by President Barack Obama’s pen and phone, they’ll now be able to get a tax refund.”

The above was found here:  http://conservativetribune.com/obamas-irs-refunds-taxes/?utm_source=Facebook&utm_medium=ConservativeTribune&utm_content=2016-05-06&utm_campaign=manualpost

While none of this implicates Lynch of a conflict of interest directly, it does raise the serious possibility that a conflict of interest may exist because her role in Clinton’s affairs while working at Hogan and Hartson are being questioned.

That’s about it for this week.  Seeing how things go, problem wise with getting it posted, might make my column a tad late next week.
