Racin' Stuff:

                                                                                 By Tom Avenengo

First things, first:

Just wondering – did you watch the “Danica 200” last week on SPEED?  Seems that they’re saying that the attendance at the track was more than ever before, for an ARCA race.  I imagine the same might apply to the Nationwide race this coming Saturday – with her in it.

Some of my thoughts:

Danica:

A lot of hype about her running in the ARCA race, wasn’t there?  Does she really deserve it?

Looking at her Indy car record, I’d say no – one win in all the races she’s entered, and to many, that was a “gimme” win.  Keep in mind, she wasn’t the only rookie in the race and was only one of six women drivers.  Aside from Milka Duno crashing out in the first accident, and another woman having a serious crash, the other women weren’t on TV all that much – oh, excuse me, there was one other who was running with the leaders until she dropped back over the last few laps.  Also, keep in mind – Danica had probably the best car in that race.  I will give her credit, though, for how she handled her excursion through the grass, and didn’t hit anything.  A better test will be this coming Saturday in the Nationwide race.  And, no, she doesn’t have to qualify on speed – she’s got a guaranteed starting spot due to the way NASCAR has screwed up racing over these last few years.

Hmmm, around 12:50 AM on Wednesday, while checking out news on Yahoo!, I came across this – about Danica.  What I have, above, was done early on Tuesday.

And, for this one, below, – I agree, 100%!!

Passed along via e-mail:

“Like most folks in this country, I have a job. I work, they pay me - I  pay my taxes & the government distributes my taxes  as  it sees fit.

In order to get that paycheck, in my case, I am required to pass a random urine test  (with which I have no problem).

What I do have a problem with is the distribution of my taxes to people who don't have to pass a urine test.

So, here is my question: Shouldn't one have to pass a urine test to get a welfare check because I have to pass one to earn it for them?

Please understand, I have no problem with helping people get back on their feet. I do, on the other hand, have a problem with helping someone sitting on their BUTT----doing dope while I work.

Can you imagine how much money each state would save if people had to pass a urine test to get a public assistance check?

I guess we could call the program "URINE OR YOU'RE OUT"!

Pass this along if you agree or simply delete if you don't.  Hope you all will pass it along, though. Something has to change in this country - AND SOON!”

Don’t forget!:

This coming Sunday, February 14th, is the date for – what?  The Daytona 500, you say?  Well, guys, it’s also VALENTINES DAY!  Don’t say you didn’t know!  Flowers, or a nice box of chocolates, would be a nice gift for your lady!

An interesting e-mail:

Here is an e-mail that was sent out to the Yahoo! Race History Group.  Quite interesting, to say the least.  I responded, and am anxious to see what else transpires on this:

This is a question for the old timers but mostly from here in the east. Back in the mid 60's in the north east part of Trenton, NJ there was a homeless man that lived on the streets and his last name was Rice (his first name was either George or Johnny). He would often hang out at an Esso gas station that was run by a friend of mine. He would tell everyone that he use to drive race cars but no one would believe him. He said he once had a lot of money but lost it on woman and turned to drinking. I think he ended up dying on the streets. Several years ago I found out that there were a few drivers named Rice that raced in the 40's and 50's here in the east. Does anyone know the story of the racing Rice's and if one of them could be the one that ended up homeless on the streets of Trenton.”

Track news:

Well, in a way, no news I suppose.  The other day, on Facebook, I saw a tentative schedule for the CRSA 305 Sprint Cars.  I didn’t see any races scheduled for the Accord speedway – yet.  From what I’ve been told, no response - yet, from Accord, to the CRSA.  Sure hope they have some shows at the “Big A”.  The CRSA is at OCFS for I believe 4 shows – one that is during Eastern States Weekend.  As for the other three, it would be neat if Accord could schedule at least a couple of CRSA visits on the Friday nights previous to OCFS’s.

The History of the Sport:

If you recall, last week I had something in this section about a 100 mile midget race that was held at the Langhorne track on October 15th, and said what ha happened to George Rice.  His daughter, Sally, e-mailed me with this information:

Just read through your column and have a correction for Langhorne.  Near the end of the 100 laps my dad signaled he would be coming in for a fuel stop.  Sonny Barnes refused to let him and my dad ran out of fuel on the backside which we could not see.  We were kind of scared until we eventually saw him walking around the 4th turn.  Then we were glad we were in the stands and not near Sonny.....a not too bright fellow....as when my father blew up no one wanted to be there.  He didn't do that often but knew when he was right.  I believe with signals he told Sonny he needed to pull in and Sonny said he had enough and refused to let him stop.  This must have taken at least 2 laps or more as my father repeated he needed fuel.  That is the one race he always regretted losing.  He was never able to conquer the track.

Something of interest to the family was when he won the Danbury Championship.  The trophy was a beautiful table lamp with a picture of Tony Bonadies in his car on the lamp shade.  My dad put it in the living room and I do not think he ever asked for a replacement.  I am wondering now whatever happened to the lamp.”

And now, about that 100-mile midget race that was held on the mile track in Goshen, NY on September 21, 1947:

I really have no idea as to why I didn’t attend that race in Goshen.  It was held the day before I turned all of ten years of age.  About the only thing I can think of was that at that time, my mother and father might have separated.  Sure wish I had been there, though!

My brother, “Jim”, told me about it, many times.  Told me how his favorite driver, Ted Tappett had won the pole – that being his first time on a dirt mile track, and how he was leading when his car “blew up”.  He said Tappett was standing by, in “Dutch” Schaefer’s pit, to possibly relieve “Dutch” after a stone had hit his goggles, broke them, and ended up in his eye.  “Dutch” never asked for relief, but did make a quick pit stop to change goggles, so he said.

I often wondered why some of the ARDC’s top drivers were not at Goshen that day, and I came to find out that there was another race – maybe in Springfield, MA.  Somehow, methinks the Goshen race was not a point race for the ARDC, thus, those that were in the point chase for the championship, like Schindler and Rice, were at an ARDC race that day.  I put out many queries about that Goshen race, not being able to find anything on it, via the Internet, and one person, photographer John DaDalt, came through when he sent me a copy of a newspaper article that was about it.

For “Dutch”, it really had to be a heart breaker, for sure.  As I’m typing this up – I wonder, what would have happened if they had put just a little gas in his car when he replaced those goggles?  Then again, from what my brother told me, “Dutch” really didn’t stop in his pit when they were exchanged for a new pair, just slowed way down.  “Dutch” had a two-lap lead over the field, when he ran out of gas on his 98th lap.  He pitted, got fuel into the tank, and took off.  But, something was drastically wrong!  Try as he might, he couldn’t get his engine to run right, due to the fact that it wasn’t getting enough fuel.  The problem:  The gas cap wasn’t put back on tightly enough!  To get pressure in the tanks, there was a hand pump on the side of the midgets that when pumped, would force air into the tanks.  The air would force the fuel into the fuel line and into the engine.  With the cap not tight, the pumped in air just went out through the opening where the cap was.  While frantically pumping air into the tank, “Dutch” hit the inside fence on the tracks second straight – the track was triangular, in shape.  Before he could get going, and up to speed, both Henry Renard and Chet Gibbons made up those two laps, and passed Schaefer for the lead, the win (Renard) and second place (Gibbons).  “Dutch” finished 3rd.

The top ten finishers:

 1.  Henry Renard,  2.   Chet Gibbons,  3.   “Dutch” Schaefer,  4.  Elmer Wilson,  5.  Tony Bonadies,  6.  Al Keller,  7.  Clarence La Rue.  8.  Jimmy Taylor,  9.  Johnny Ritter and 10.  Ralph Sheeler.

Others in that race:  Johnny Ringger, Len Duncan, Jeep Colkitt, Walt Fusco, Al Silver, Larry Shurter, Ralph Lund, Bob Disbrow, George Lewis, Tex Keane, Steve McGrath, Joe Barzda and Rex Records.

Some years later, Schaefer attempted to run in the Indy 500.  I’ve read some stories as to just why he didn’t or wasn’t allowed to run it – when that stone went into his eye, it caused enough damage to basically render it as blind.  That caused those in the AAA to be a little worried about his vision for the 500.  Another one was that “Dutch” and the AAA weren’t on the best of terms – what with the AAA trying to get more midget races scheduled in the East, and the ARDC more or less keeping them out, and “Dutch” was an ARDC driver.  Who really knows, for sure?  However, I think that had he been able to enter the 500, and given a competitive ride, he would have held his own.  After all, quite a few of his ARDC competitors ran in the 500 and did quite well.

A little unknown fact:  Last summer I was talking on the telephone with the son of Phil Walters (Ted Tappett), and during our talk, I made mention that I would have loved to have seen Tappett run the Indy 500.  I was rather surprised when his son told me that his father considered that race to be too dangerous, and that was why he had no desire to run it.

I have two photos in my computer that were taken at Goshen that day – Johnny Ringger in the Buck Wheeler # 62 and Johnny Ritter in the Cheeseman # 8 Offy.  Nine days after the Goshen race, Ritter came out with his own Canary Yellow # 3 Offy when they raced at the Hinchliffe Stadium, in Paterson.  I’ll never forget that night.  Yes, that was the car that ended up being owned by Ken Brenn and driven by Rodger Ward at Lime Rock in 1959 in the Formula Libra race, which Ward won, against some of the worlds best sports/racing and Formula 1 cars and drivers.

Former Dirt Oval runners:

At the racing events in Atlantic City, there were some former Dirt Oval runners that didn’t make the features.  In the TQ’s, Mike Casario didn’t qualify for both nights features.  In the Champ Karts, George Bark, Jr., Ryan Swartz, Ryan Kendall, Tom Ervin, Clinton Mills and Jeff Gallup didn’t make the feature.  I was surprised to see that there were only 25 Slingshots entered at Atlantic City.  This info was obtained via the AARN.

Other racin’ stuff:

As I’ve watched practice and racing from Daytona, one thing is still being mentioned, as it was last year – the bumpiness of the track.  Wonder when they’ll get them fixed?  Oh, and not only bumpier, but a lot slicker, too.

NASCAR is thinking of making some changes to the green/white/checker thing?  I caught something about it during practice on Wednesday.

Other (non racing) news:

Man, isn’t Toyota having problems?  It seems that with all this technology, we might be worse off than what we had – say back in the 50’s and 60’s as far as what was under the hood, when we could work on our cars with ease and no need for a computer.

And, Toyota isn’t alone.  It seems that Honda has some problems, too, with air bags:
