First things, first:

Did you catch any of the Cup race from Bristol this past Sunday?  I caught some of it.  Things look kind of bad don’t they – especially when one sees so many empty seats at a track that was always sold out, and almost impossible to get tickets for.  It isn’t only NASCAR to blame, either.  A good part of the blame has to be put on our economy, with a little on the weather and the forecast for the day.  And, I’m pretty sure that I read that this was the first time at Bristol when smoking was not permitted.  Another reason, maybe, for some of those empty seats?  Might Jimmie Johnson also be part of the reason?  Right now he seems unbeatable.

Later on, in this column, in “Some of my thoughts” section, I put in what my son, Eric, and I spoke about, on Sunday, as to a possible solution.

Insurance for racers:

I thought I’d put this in, again, in case anyone might have missed it, earlier.  No, I don’t get anything out of it, just passing the information along.

Track news:

Oakland Valley Speedway – formerly known as OVRP’s Dirt Oval – I found this over on the 4 Cycle forum:

just went up, turns are moved out so straightaways are longer and looks like the clay from the infeild was used, its banked quite a bit, looks like shellhammers just bigger”

Did you get to see all the photos that Ralph Corwin took at the Middletown Motorsports show last week?  They’re on the New England Tractor’s website.

The History of the Sport:

Something completely different this week.  Due to the length of my columns, and what with what I was going to do, I’ve decided to do a special article that will come out any where from Saturday to Monday, as long as Jeff Johnson, who runs the New England Tractor website has the time to get it posted.  Sadly, there will be some photos to go along with the article, so it won’t appear on Dirt Track Digest.  So, those of you that read my stuff on DTD – to see what the special article is about, you’ll have to go here:  http://newenglandtractor.com/racereport/  So check out the website from Saturday on - no need to search all over for it, either, since it might be the top item on the website.

Former Dirt Oval runners:

Last Friday, down in Selinsgrove, Pa in the ROC 358 racing, Michael Storms had a 1st in his heat and a DNF in the feature, placing 19th.  Danny Creeden had a DNF in his heat, placing 8th, a 7th in his consi, and a 12th in the feature.  Mike Mammana had a 5th in his heat and a 3rd in his consi.  No idea as to why Danny was in the feature and Mike wasn’t.

On Saturday, in the ROC Big Block racing, Billy VanInwegen had a 5th in his heat, a 9th in his consi and a 10th in the non-qualifiers race.  Michael Storms had a 6th in his heat, a 2nd in his consi and a DNF in the feature, being placed 21st.

Coming up:

The 20th annual Vintage Race Car Meet up in Loudon, NH is coming up, and for the race cars, it’s Tuesday, May 18th, Wednesday, the 19th and Thursday, the 20th.

Any idea as to why?

Just a little story here – last Saturday, my son, Eric, and I, went to the ROC big block modified race down in Selinsgrove, Pa.  On our trip we basically are mostly on two Interstate Highways – I-84 and I-81.  Two things of interest on I-84:

First, as we were heading West I was doing a tad over 70 MPH, and some dude on a bike passed us like we were going backwards.  Never did see him again.  I think he was wearing a helmet – something that is NOT required in Pennsylvania, believe it or not.

Any idea as to why those idiots have to go so fast?

Second:

Then, on our way home, while heading East on I-84, maybe around 11:00 to 11:15, we passed a car that was over on the right shoulder with it’s 4-ways flashing.  I didn’t think much of it at the time, but something weird as heck happened a few minutes later.  On I-84, there’s quite a space between East and West bound lanes.  Off in the distance I could see a set of headlights coming our way.  I thought they were a shade to close – lane wise, for that car to be heading West – on the West bound side.  I was right.  That car was heading West on the left lane of the East bound lanes – coming right towards us.  When I finally realized it, I slowed way down and constantly flashed my high beams at him.  That made no difference, and he passed right past us.

Keep in mind; this is out in what could be called “no mans land”.  So, what was he doing heading West in the East bound lanes?  Then we had a thought – was he on his way to help that car that we passed – the one with the 4 way flashers on?  After all, it is quite a distance between places where you might be able to make an illegal U-turn, you know?  Yes, it was kind of scary.

Any idea as to why some people have to drive the wrong way on major highways?

Oh, and another thing – while heading West on I-84, on our way to Selinsgrove, we must have passed at least a dozen utility trucks, also heading West.  They were all from Michigan, and I’d have to say that they were on their way back home from helping out some of the areas here in the Northeast that suffered some damage from the storm we had last week.

Video time:

It was back on March 25, 2009, when we lost, as far as I’m concerned, one of our finest singer/songwriters – Dan Seals, way to early in life.

Here’s one of my favorites of his, and, according to Dan, his, too:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PeXydLRaMJg&feature=related

Some of my thoughts:

Well, not really mine, but my son, Eric’s , and what he told me the other day.  You won’t find a bigger race fan that Eric, and to see him more or less, shy away from watching NASCAR on TV is rather upsetting.  So while he was in the proves of putting him dirt modified back together this past Sunday, we discussed what is wrong with NASCAR today.

The length of the races – you don’t see real racing over most of the event anymore – especially in 500 milers.

Maybe what should be done is to run some shorter races – an amount of set laps – say 50 laps at a time.  Heck, even throw in a mandatory pit stop under green flag conditions.  At the end of 50 laps – or whatever has been decided on, throw the checkered flag.  Take a five-minute or ten-minute break so work can be done on the cars.

Invert all cars that were on the lead lap – regardless of how many, with lapped cars behind them.  Race for another set amount of laps.  Repeat what happened at the end of those first 50 laps.  Points would be given for finishing positions in each segment, and at the end of all of the segments, all points earned over the course of the event would be added up, and that is how you would determine the race winner and following positions.  Bonus points could be awarded to each lap leader, and also to each segment winner.

Set laps could also be of different amounts, too, with longer stretches at the beginning, middle, or end.

Is this true?:

This past Monday, while working on this column, I received this, in an e-mail:

Some have said that the stimulus hasn't saved many jobs, but here is a case where at least one job was clearly saved.

According to an unnamed university source, Oregon State University Athletic Director Bob DeCarolis was considering firing their basketball coach, Craig Robinson after his poor 8-11 start to the season (2-5 in the Pac 10 conference). When word of this incipient situation reached Washington , Undersecretary of Education Martha Kanter was immediately dispatched to Corvallis , Oregon with $17 million in stimulus money for
Oregon State University .
The source now says that Craig Robinson's job is safe for this year.

For the record, Coach Robinson just happens to be Michelle Obama's brother.”

The “crowd” at Bristol looked a little down, to me, as I caught just glimpses of the Cup race last Sunday.

On TF, this was said:  They must have a lot of people in line waiting to be served keeping them from watching the race.
Or.... ” – it was just a little sarcasm about the fan turnout.

As you might have heard, there was quite a serious accident at Bristol in the Legends race.  Larry Pearson was “T-boned” by Charlie Glotzbach. A still photo of the impact, showing just how far one car went into the other, can be seen here, if you scroll down a little:

Just a few things that Matt McLaughlin covers in his article:

“It was fun to watch Brad Keselowski and Carl Edwards race side-by-side, lap after lap without contact after the mess at Atlanta.  My guess is a whole lot more was said in the NASCAR trailer than the fans will ever hear about.”

“Empty seats and vast tracts of them at Bristol, once the toughest ticket in all of sports to score? OK, it’s time to hit the panic button. Among those who weren’t in attendance were smokers who have been banned from the grandstands.”

“Having had an exclusive deal with NASCAR for over a decade and a half, wouldn’t you think that Goodyear could finally bring safe, competitive tires to every track?”

“You’ve got to love Jeff Hammond’s latest attempt at a column on the FOX sports site blasting internet writers for their take on the sport.

This is the same guy who memorably appeared with Chris Myers in a hot tub during a pre-race segment -

How about some of these subjects:

Joonyer and his crew chief having some “nice” discussions on the radio during the Bristol Cup race – McGrew and Dale Jr. on the radio at Bristol: Crew chief Lance McGrew didn't hold back the tough love with driver #88-Dale Earnhardt Jr. on Sunday. The first snipe came after Junior complained about a loose car following pit stops during the fifth caution on Lap 205.  Lots more, with many “expletives” being shown, and you can read what was said (almost all), below.

How about:  “More changes coming to the COT?”

Or - Ford Racing Notes and Quotes - Jack and Carl: #99-Carl Edwards and car owner Jack Roush participated in a meeting with NASCAR officials and Penske Racing owner Roger Penske and driver #12-Brad Keselowski. Both Roush and Edwards commented on the meeting during Nationwide Series qualifying on Saturday.

And:

The NASCAR-Edwards-Keselowski Meeting - Keselowski: from a Dodge Motorsports PR, #12 Penske Racing driver Brad Keselowski discusses the meeting between NASCAR, the #99 Roush Fenway / Penske Racing drivers / owners:

Note:  I had read where Keselowski was going to ask NASCAR just what they could and could not do, as far as NASCAR telling them to “Go at it boys”.

NASCAR’s rule book called into question –

By Jay Hart, Mar 16, 10:05 am EDT

A couple of e-mail topics sent to Mr. Hart:

“Is there really a NASCAR rule book, or do they just make it up as they go along?”

“Do you think the penalty would have been more severe if Edwards wasn’t employed by Roush/Fenway?”

I put these two emails(above) back to back because I think it’s important to note that it’s a lot easier to govern from the sidelines when you don’t have to factor in all the variables.

The continuum of NASCAR’s survival is as follows: teams showing up to the track —> sponsors supporting said teams —> said teams investing sponsorship money back into the competition —> the competition creating competitive races —> fans showing up and tuning in to watch competitive races.

The real enforcer of the behavioral expectations of drivers has spoken. Scotts, Carl Edwards’ sponsor of the car at Atlanta, (Scotts) has issued the following statement:

Additional racing news:

To say I’m very disappointed about the lack of any news about the 12-hour race that was held last Saturday, down in Sebring, Fl. would be – well, the truth.  Not one word about it in our “local” paper.  What is even more disturbing is that over on the Track Forum, there’s a special section just for Sports Cars, ALMS, Grand-Am and SCCA.  No actual results there, either.

I was fortunate to have attended the 12-hour race at Sebring, back in 1957.  Back then, these world ranked drivers competed, not only at Sebring, but also in Formula One – something we just don’t see happening, anymore:

Juan Manuel Fangio, Jean Behra, Ssir Stirling Moss, Harry Schell, Mike Hawthorne, Masten Gregory, Mike Collins, Maurice Trintignant, Alphonso de Portago and Luigi Musso.

Other (non racing) news:

BofA to start reducing mortgage principal –

Bank of America Corp. is giving some of its most troubled mortgage borrowers relief from the threat of foreclosure.

The bank, the largest mortgage servicer in the country, said Wednesday it will forgive up to 30 percent of some customers' total mortgage balances. The homeowners must have missed at least two months of mortgage payments and owe at least 20 percent more than their home is currently worth.

FACT CHECK: Spinning the new health care law:

In part:

The tumultuous health care debate that brought you death panels and socialism has spun off a catalog of popular myths that will keep growing as President Barack Obama and all sides battle toward the midterm elections this fall.

Facts are stubborn, the saying goes. But myths about the legislation are likely to persist as well. And a lot of people don't agree on which is which.

Much more on this, and you can read it, here:

Closing with these:

The difference between the North and the South - clearly explained....  at last – continued from last week:

The North has the rust belt; the South has the Bible Belt .

FOR NORTHERNERS MOVING SOUTH . . ...... In the South : If you run your car into a ditch, don't panic. Four men in a four-wheel drive pickup truck with a tow chain will be along shortly. Don't try to help them, just stay out of their way. This is what they live for.

Don't be surprised to find movie rentals and bait in the same store... Do not buy food at this store.

Remember, 'Y'all' is singular, 'all y'all' is plural, and 'all y'all's' is plural possessive

Get used to hearing 'You ain't from round here, are ya?'

Save all manner of bacon grease. You will be instructed later on how to use it.

Don't be worried at not understanding what people are saying. They can't understand you either.   The first Southern statement to creep into a transplanted Northerner's vocabulary is the adjective 'big'ol,' truck or 'big'ol' boy. Most Northerners begin their Southern-influenced dialect this wayAll of them are in denial about itThe proper pronunciation you learned in school is no longer proper
Be advised that 'He needed killin..' is a valid defense here.
If you hear a Southerner exclaim, 'Hey, y'all watch this,' you should stay out of the way.   These are likely to be the last words he'll ever say.

If there is the prediction of the slightest chance of even the smallest accumulation of snow, your presence is required at the local grocery store. It doesn't matter whether you need anything or notYou just have to go there.

Do not be surprised to find that 10-year olds own their own shotguns, they are proficient marksmen,  and their mammas taught them how to aim.

In the South, we have found that the best way to grow a lush green lawn is to pour gravel on it and call it a driveway.

AND REMEMBER: If you do settle in the South and bear children, don't think we will accept them as Southerners...After all, if the cat had kittens in the oven, we ain't gonna  call 'em biscuits. Send this to four people that ain't related to you, and I reckon your life will turn into a country music song 'fore you know it.    Your kin would get a kick out of it too!

May “Guardian Angels” sit on the shoulders of all of our race drivers and race fans, and guide them safely around the tracks!

Drive safe!
